An impressive bronze sculpture of an Arab horse by the Yorkshire-based artist Sally Arnup (1930-2015) is one of the highlights of our Pictures and Sculpture Sale on 30 November.

Arnup was one of the finest figurative bronze sculptors of her age and has a well-earned reputation both nationally and internationally for her life-like animal sculptures. Her work currently resides in major collections around the world and she received many commissions from high profile clients, including the late Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, the Earl of Chichester and the author Robert Fleming.

A student at the prestigious Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and the Royal College of Art, Arnup settled in Yorkshire after her marriage to the painter and potter Mick Arnup. She was head of sculpture at the former York Art School from 1958-72 and exhibited at RA, RSA, RBA, and the Paris Salon.

Measuring 105cm high, ‘Arab Horse Aslan’ (1985 – signed and numbered IV/X) carries a guide price of £10,000 to £15,000.

Arnup is famed for the life-like qualities of her pieces and used to work with the live animal in front of her rather than relying on sketches or photographs. In fact, the subjects often came to live with her family for weeks at a time while she studied them in detail.

Her subjects included all types of creatures from farm animals to prize racing horses and even exotics such as the silver leopard made in 1971 that was presented to HM The Queen by the City of York.

The Sale will take place at Elstob & Elstob’s Ripon salerooms on Wednesday 30 November at 10am, with viewing on Tuesday 29 November between 10am and 7pm.
