Our Antiques & Furniture Sale on Tuesday, 4 October has a collection of signed photographs by Terry O'Neill (1938-2019), the famous British photographer is known for his distinctive snapshot aesthetic and candid portraits of celebrities.
His portraits of public figures—including the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, members of the British Royal Family and some of Hollywood’s most iconic stars —are noted for their unposed, intimate nature.
Picking up his camera in 1958, O’Neill enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame, and along with the photographers Terence Donovan, David Bailey, and Patrick Lichfield, his work has been credited with defining the collective image of the swinging sixties. He produced magazine covers for Time, Newsweek, Vanity Fair and many other renowned publications. One of his most celebrated works was that of Faye Dunaway—who he went on to marry—the morning after she won her Best Actress Oscar for the film Network in 1977.
He is now recognised as one of the 20th century’s most accomplished and collected photographers, and his work hangs in galleries and private collections around the globe. O’Neill was awarded the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal in 2011.
