Unveiling our new sporting and militaria department

We are very pleased to announce the establishment of a new department of Militaria, Nauticalia and Sporting Antiques, which will be led by specialist David Douglas - a leading authority in this field.

This is an area of antiques that regularly achieves excellent results and we have already built up a strong following amongst buyers and vendors both at a regional and national level. David Douglas is the ideal person to take this specialism forward, with over 50 years’ experience of auctioneering and cataloguing in this exciting sphere.

A lawyer by trade, David has always combined his professional life with a long-standing interest and involvement in military and sporting antiques. Whilst living in the Midlands, he became regional chairman of the Military Historical Society. In this role, he formed long-term friendships with many established experts and collectors of the day and he continues to be involved in dispersing collections as an executor of several estates. He also had a regular slot at Nottingham Cattle Market, dealing in antique and collectable 'smalls', which soon led to cataloguing for better quality quarterly sales, as well as freelance auctioneering for several salerooms and rural practices.

On retirement as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law at Nottingham Trent University, David moved back to his native Northumberland where he formed Northumberland County Auctions, offering antiques and collectables at bi-monthly sales. He eventually sold this portfolio to a competitor, whilst continuing to source high-end sporting guns for a leading London saleroom.

Over the years, David has developed an impressive network of valuable contacts in the field, including the management of a number of shooting and fishing estates, that has resulted in locating many high-quality and unusual objects.

David is delighted to have joined our prestigious team of specialists and looks forward to being able to share his knowledge and expertise with Elstob & Elstob clients. He will also act as a valuer and agent for the company in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. If you would like to chat to David about any aspect of buying and selling at auction, please call 01765 699200.
