Record number of Border Fine Arts pieces enter our auction

One of our biggest collections thus far is going under the hammer in this week’s Elstob & Elstob auction

Border Fine Arts were known for creating life-like sculptures depicting a whole variety of typical farmyard scenes, woodland creatures and rural landscapes, as well as branded items such as Beatrix Potter and Winnie the Pooh characters. Founded in 1974 out of a countryside location on the Scottish Borders, they produced a vast catalogue of realistic models but, having closed its factory doors in 2016, pieces are now in demand.

At this weekend’s auction at Bedale Hall, thanks to a single owner, we have 160 models totalling 55 lots of Border Fine Arts and other sculptures, including limited edition items.

With estimates starting from £40 and going up to £300, you’ll find models like "Lifting the Pinks",  "The Last Look", "Pot Cart" and "At the Vintage", all of which were inspired by the surroundings of the Border Fine Arts factory in Langholm.

Our director, David Elstob, said: “It is unusual to find such a large collection and particularly one where the pieces are in such good condition.”

Also included in the consignment are models by other factories such as Country Artists and Sherratt & Simpson. Of particular note is the thirteen Sherratt & Simpson animal models that include badgers, stoat, mice, and cats atop branches and trees. They come in a variety of different sizes with some on a wooden display base and, as was trademark, were hand finished meaning each figure is slightly different.

While there are no Beatrix Potter or Winnie the Pooh characters in this collection, we do have larger pieces showing scenes reminiscent of country life in decades gone by such as heavy horses pulling logs, or traditional farming scenes of tractors pulling combine harvesters and farmers fixing fences.

Although many pieces make for standalone items, often added together the figurines tell a story of British rural life.

In the past, some pieces have been known to sell for close to £2000.

Pre-sale viewing takes place on Friday 22 November, 10am - 7pm; Saturday 23 November, 9am - 5pm; and on the day itself from 8am - 10am. For further information about the sale or individual lots, please call 01677 333003 or email:
