Militaria, nauticalia and sporting antiques

This thriving area of antiques has a strong and loyal following at Elstob & Elstob, achieving outstanding results for vendors. We are in a position to offer expert valuations across the specialism and we encourage you to get in touch with us to discuss consignments from single items to large collections. Impartial advice to prospective buyers is also willingly offered.

The popular militaria section covers a wide area of collecting, including: the sale of military equipment and accessories; guns, rifles, pistols, shotguns and antique firearms; edged weapons; uniforms and helmets; and British and international medals, awards and decorations.

We are also specialists in nauticalia, which encompasses the sale of marine, maritime, nautical and scientific antiques. This fascinating area gives a great insight into our great tradition of maritime history, whether it is through a painting or model of a ship, or a compass or telescope.

Sporting collectibles and memorabilia repeatedly do well at auction and our sales are an excellent source of unique and collectible pieces from fishing rods, tackle and angling equipment to taxidermy, hunting and field sports paraphernalia, trophies and firearms. The department has particular expertise in the sale of high-end guns.

This department is expertly run by David Douglas, who has spent over 50 years’ cataloguing and auctioneering in this exciting field.

As well as running his own auction house, David has considerable experience as a freelance auctioneer and cataloguer for a number of salerooms and practices, and was previously a regular source of high-end material for a leading London firm of auctioneers.

One of David’s particular strengths is the sheer depth and breadth of his contacts built up over his career, which he is now able to draw upon for the exclusive benefit of Elstob & Elstob’s clients.
